Who is Mandarava? 

You see the name "Mandarava" all over the web these days--on Buddhist sites, shopping sites, people use it as a screen name on Facebook and My Space.  People use it as their professional or "stage" names.  Music bands use it as song and album names, there are even books written about Princess Mandarava and on and on. The "cosmic awareness", if you will, of this name is ever expanding.

But 10 years ago, if you searched for the word "Mandarava" you would have found it in ONLY ONE PLACE . . .

We know because we regularly searched for it when we started this business and started building this website.  We took a chance and actually obtained the U.S. Trademark on the name "Mandarava" for use in our business, so no one could take it away from us.  Despite the fact that it has been VERY difficult to grow brand recognition with a name that is so difficult for Westerners to pronounce, we have no regrets.  We honor Princess Mandarava for her sacrifices and her example . . . and here's why . . .


Princess Mandarava was an 8th century Indian princess from the northern area of India bordering what is now Nepal (but was formerly part of Tibet).  She was chosen as a consort by the revered Padmasambhava, the Buddhist cleric who brought Buddhism to Tibet.  Padmasambhava, next to The Buddha, is the most revered figure in Tibetan Buddhism.  Princess Mandarava was forsaken by her father for following Buddhism instead of her father's religion, and was condemned to death.  Despite that, she refused to compromise her beliefs, even to save her life. She is an example of faith, strength and feminine independence, and an inspiration not only to Buddhists, but to women everywhere, of every religion and walk of life.  We were so inspired by her story that, despite the fact that it has been VERY difficult to build brand recognition using a name that is so "foreign" to our fellow Westerners, we chose to use her name for our business and our website.  Owner's note: As a woman, with a woman-owned business, with many woman-focused products, I have found Mandarava to be of particular inspiration to me.

How do you pronounce Mandarava?
Manarava Pronounciation:
For many Americans, the name Mandarava is daunting--but it's actually quite simple if you break it up into 4 syllables.

The easiest pronunciation for Americans and other Westerners would be:  "MAN duh RAAH vuh"
with the stress on the first and third vowels.

"man"  -- pronounced just like the word "man"

"da"  -- pronounced like "duh" OR, alternatively, "daah" like "aah"

"ra"  -- pronounced like "raw"

"va" -- rhymes with "aah" or, alternatively,  "uh"

Buddhists and persons of Asian, Indian, Nepali and Tibetan origin pronounce the name differently, but the pronunciation above is the Americanized version.  Sometimes, the "v" will be pronounced as a "b", and the stress will be different.
