Hathor, (also Hator, Het-Hert), was the personification of the Milky Way, that streak of milky light in the night sky which is actually the edge-on view of our own galaxy. She was worshipped for so many eons that her image and meaning morphed, changed and merged with other goddesses, which explains much of the confusion about her today. The handle is capped with Het-Hert (Hathor) in her mother cow motif (she faces you either way you turn the mirror), topped with a shield bearing the pharaoh wearing solar disk and carrying the ankh. This aegis (shield) motif, was very popular with the Egyptian royals.
