The scarab, or dung beetle, enjoyed a sacred status in ancient Egypt. Egyptians believed that the dung beetles only appeared as males, who created their own kind by fertilizing small balls of dung. They associated this action with that of the god Khepri, who was believed to roll the sun through the afterlife at night, and renew the world each day by rolling the sun through the visible sky. Dung beetles, therefore, represented transformation and renewal, since they rolled balls of dung before them, from which emerged baby beetles. The scarab was an important element in funary wares, and usually was placed above the heart of deceased. Hand-painted resin. Approx. size: 5 3/4 inches wide. Approx. weight: 1.92 lbs.
