"She Who Is Powerful". Lions, of course, were a very powerful and frightening reality to the Egyptians, since they could easily blend into the landscape and attack, without warning, any caravan, outpost, or unattended flock.

It's not surprising, then that the lion should become an equally powerful spiritual symbol, hopefully invoked for protection from the forces of man and nature. Representing the more aggressive aspects of the feminine, Sekhmet is often depicted as a destroyer and avenger, although she is also the patron goddess of healers and physicians, and a mother protectress figure.

As the daughter of the sun god, Ra, Sekhmet is typically protrayed as a lion-headed goddess wearing the maginificent solar disk and uraeus (cobra) headdress. She is one of the goddesses invoked as the "Eye of Ra' with the power to breathe fire upon his enemies.
