Undoubtedly one of the
favorite goddesses in the Hindu pantheon, Lakshmi (pronounced LACK-SHMEE or LOCK-SHMEE) is
believed to bring wealth, love, and beauty to her devotees. In India, her festival,
called "Dwali", is celebrated in November, when the many who wish to
attract Lakshmi's attention (and favors) clean their homes and place sparkling items on
altars to catch the goddess' eye. It is said that she is particularly attracted to
bright gold items set out in her honor. Lakshmi's colors are pink, gold and orange.
Lakshmi is the consort of Visnu, the Hindu god of preservation. Hindus believe that
Vishnu has incarnated 8 times upon the earth to help mankind avoid complete disaster.
As Vishnu's shakti, or feminine energy counterpart, it is Lakshmi's job to
transform Vishnu's dormant energy into action--without the feminine influence, the power
cannot be actualized and remains useless. It is as if the male energy were a pile of
kindling without a match. Lakshi's feminine energy provides the "spark"
that lights the fire and turns dormant power into real action.
