The snake goddess
of Crete was found painted on Minoan maze walls, and in famous Cretan statues.
It is believed that she represents the female oracle, since snakes are believed to have
psychic powers. In addition, she represents fearlessness, since she handles the
deadly snakes with deftness and confidence. And, since it is obvious that she is
presiding over an important ceremony, she demonstrates the social power of women.
In ancient times, women were the only people allowed to devine the future, or to act as
seers. With the rise of male-dominated religions, women lost their social and
economic power, and only male priests were allowed to practice as oracles and
fortune-tellers.
Today, women are re-asserting their right to personal, social and economic power, and the
Snake Goddess is an appropriate symbol of their courageous struggles for justice and
equality.
