Ancient Goddesses
The most ancient goddess in our collection is the splendid
Goddess of Willendorf, so named due to the fact that the original
sculpture was discovered near the town of Willendorf, Germany, at a
prehistoric site. Estimated to be between 25,000 and 35,000
years old, the figure

Venus of Willendorf
demonstrates some exceedingly interesting features--and lack
thereof. Note the exaggerated breasts, probably signifying a
nursing mother, the corpulence of the body (possibly signifying
abundance), and the faceless head. While clearly a fertility
symbol, the absence of facial features is most intriguing. Since we
have no written records from the people or period from which the
figure emerged, we can only speculate on the meaning of the goddess'
eyeless condition. It may be that ancient peoples considered
the goddess too powerful to be looked in the eye.

Goddesses of Ancient Egypt
Isis (Auset) was not only the loyal and determined wife of Osiris, but a clever
wench indeed, having tricked the most powerful god in the Egyptian pantheon into
uttering his "secret name" and thus bestowing upon her the power of magic.

Egyptian Goddess Isis
Goddess of Love and
Family
The cult of Isis was the only Egyptian worship to survive through the 3rd
Century of the Christian Era. You can find the classic Winged Isis motif,
as well as Standing Isis motifs in our handmade jewelry as well as statues,
incense burners, earrings and jewelry boxes.
Other important Egyptian goddesses featured in our collection include the very
popular cat goddess Bast (Bastet), her sister the fierce lion goddess Sekhmet (Sokhmet,
Sekmet), and Nekhbet, the Vulture Goddess representing Upper (Southern) Egypt.
The three most ancient Egyptian goddesses in our collection, Maat (goddess of
Truth), Hathor (mother of the gods, goddess of pleasure and magic, assimilated
into Isis in later history), and Neith (goddess of wisdom, war and weaving,
comparable to Athena). We also feature the beautiful Nepthys, sister of
Isis, Selket, the Scorpion Goddess. These two goddesses, along with Isis
and Neith, are featured in replicas of the four gilded statues that guarded the
canopic chest of King Tut. These four make a lovely set indeed. |
