Fairies have been a
perennial favorite of old and young alike for over a
thousand years, particularly in Europe and the British
Isles. The word fairy comes from "fae", which
literally means "small", so fairies were the "little
folk", believed to come out at night and do mischievous
things.
Moderns fairies are heavily influenced by
the Victorian and Art Nouveau models--young, lovely,
playful, and able to appear in the day or night.
These benevolent, harmless fairies are much preferred
over the older types that were believed to steal
children, torment animals and burn down barns.
