Egyptian Cobra Snake Goddess Wadjet - Page 1
Symbol of the ancient Egyptian goddess, Uadjet (or Wadjet), the cobra symbolized oracular power. This may possibly be attributed to the fact that a poisonous snake bite, if not deadly, could cause disorientation, hallucinations and ravings, which could have been interpreted as prophecy under controlled conditions. The Uadjet cobra was such a powerful symbol, that it became incorporated into the royal headdresses of Pharaohs, as evidenced by King Tut's golden death mask. She was a protector of the Pharaoh and symbol of lower (Northern) Egypt.
