Egyptian Pyramid Statues and Gifts Although pyramids in the form of mastabas have existed in Egypt since pre-dynastic times, we usually associate the word with the Great Pyramid of Giza, built by Pharaoh Khufu (Cheops) whose father, Snefru, founded the 4th Dynasty (c. 2575 BC). The other two great pyramids at Giza were built by Khufu's son Khepre (Khafre, Chepren) and a successor, Menkaure. The Great Pyramid at Giza originally stood about 480 feet tall, and had a gleaming surface casing of polished stone. Most of the polished granite was stolen or re-appropriated by succeeding rulers for their own buildings. A remnant of the casing can be seen at the very top of the Great Pyramid. | | |
