Egyptian Obelisks - Page 1 The word obelisk is actually from the Greek word for meat skewer. That's not very romantic, but that's the impression that the Greeks got when they first saw these monuments. The Egyptian term for these monuments was tejen, and, although they has religious significance, they were also used by the pharaohs as billboards for the great deeds of their reigns. Only 5 obelisks remain in Egypt, as many were claimed as booty and are now in the possession of countries all over the world. The
monuments were usually carved out of a single huge piece of stone quarried at Aswan. Queen Hatshepsut (ruled 1503-1483 BC) erected 4 obelisks at Karnak temple in Luxor (ancient Thebes) , of which one still stands today. It is 93 feet tall, and weighs approximately 323 tons. | | |
